Raipur– In the border region of Sukma and Bijapur districts in Chhattisgarh, a fierce encounter is underway between the police and Naxalites. The ongoing operation involves the Cobra and Special Task Force (STF) personnel engaging with Naxal commander Hidma’s first battalion. Both sides have been exchanging fire for the past two hours, as Bastar IG Sundarraj P confirmed.

The confrontation occurs amidst the Naxalites’ observance of Janapituri Week, a significant event in their calendar. This week serves as a commemoration for fallen Maoists, during which the forces have initiated a major operation against the Naxalites. The police had received intelligence regarding the presence of Hidma and his battalion on the Sukma-Bijapur district border, prompting them to mobilize for the operation on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday morning, the troops reached the heartland of the Naxalites, provoking the Naxals to open fire. In response, the soldiers retaliated effectively. Currently, both sides are engaged in an intense exchange of gunfire.

Hidma, a feared Naxal leader, hailed from Purti village in Bastar and attended the same primary school as Madvi. Recognizing Hidma’s potential, a Naxal operative recruited him into the Bal Sangham of Naxals. Hidma continued his education in a Naxal school and impressed the group with his agility, leading to his inclusion in the LOS (Local Operating Squad). Under Hidma’s leadership, the Naxals achieved numerous successes, and he now commands the first battalion. A reward of over 25 lakh rupees is offered for his capture.

Janapituri Week, observed annually in Bastar during June, is when Maoists honor their fallen comrades. They conduct meetings in remote villages within Bastar to raise awareness about the Maoist organization and its ideology.
