AKOLA: In view of the communal clashes that erupted on Saturday evening, Akola district administration has imposed Section 144 on Sunday.
“Following the violent clashes Section 144 has been imposed in the city,” Akola Collector Neema Arora said.
Clashes erupted between two groups over a minor dispute in the Old City police station area of Maharashtra’s Akola on Saturday evening. In the video of the incident,members of the groups are seen creating ruckus damaging vehicles and pelting stones at each other. According to the information disclosed the clashes broke out between two groups after an ‘offensive’ religious post went viral on a social media platform. Following the fight, the mob moved towards Old City police station.
One person was killed and eight others were injured. Those injured included two policemen who were hurt when the rioters pelted stones, it added.
Police officials added that force was used to get thr mob into control.
The police have registered two cases and detained 26 people in connection with the clashes. The local administration said Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is also the guardian minister of Akola district, was monitoring the situation.
This is the second such incident reported in Akola in recent days. A few days ago, there was a violent clash between two groups in Shankar Nagar locality of Akot File area.
