Surat: Rahul Gandhi is traveling to Surat today to move his appeal in the Sessions court there against his conviction and two-year sentence in a defamation case. Gandhi will be present in the court today and several senior leaders, including AICC General Secretary in charge of organization K C Venugopal, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Anand Sharma, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will accompany him.

Over a week after Surat Court convicted him in the 2019 defamation case, INC alleged that its workers were stopped from entering Surat city. “There are continuous reports of illegal arrests by the BJP government of Gujarat to prevent Congress leaders and its workers from entering to Surat”, wrote a party spokesperson.

On March 23, while convicting Gandhi, the court suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to approve bail on a surety of Rs. 15000. A day later, Gandhi was disqualified as a member of Lok Sabha.
