Patiala: After spending 10 months in Patiala’s central jail, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu will walk out free today. Several Congress leaders and supporters assembled outside the prison to welcome the 59-year old former cricketer.

Tweeting about his release, the politician wrote, “Will address the media outside Patiala jail around noon…”.

While supporters chanted “Navjot Sidhu Zindabad’, dhol players were also arranged outside the jail to welcome the cricketer-turned-politician. Sidhu’s son, Karan Sidhu addressed the reporters at his residence today and said that this has been a tough time for the family.

The former state Congress chief was jailed on May 20 last year after being sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court over the death of 65-year-old Gurnam Singh in a road rage case in 1988. His release is happening earlier than the sentenced date due to his good conduct.

Earlier on March 31, Congress leader’s wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu shared an emotional tweet, saying that she asked for death from God. As she battles cancer, she wrote ”Affirmations are true: made by a sound mind or out of your senses. Navjot’s love for Punjab had driven him beyond the realm of any attachment”.
