NEW DELHI: Delhi mayor polls will not be held on Thursday as the SC has postponed the hearing of a plea filed by AAP mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi for Feb 17th. The decision came after the office of the Lieutenant Governor told the SC that it would postpone the Feb 16th election to a date after Feb 17.
The bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, meanwhile, made a significant observation as it said nominated members cannot vote in the election.
“Nominated members cannot go for election. The constitutional provision is very clear,” the bench observed.
The apex court had on February 8th sought responses from the office of the LG, pro tem presiding officer Satya Sharma of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and others on Oberoi’s plea.
The MCD elections were scheduled for 16th Feb after three failed attempts. Three successive meetings of the House were adjourned in the last month amid ruckus and commotion over the decision to give voting rights to aldermen without electing the mayor, deputy mayor, and members of the standing committee of the civic body.
