NEW DELHI: Delhi Mayor polls were called off yet again today as the opposition created a ruckus on voting permission to aldermen. ‘Elections cannot be held in such an atmosphere. The house is adjourned until the next date,’ said presiding officer Satya Sharma. BJP councilors and leaders have left the house. While, AAP councilors are still sitting inside the house, refuse to leave the session.
Ahead of the voting for electing the mayor at the Municipal House in Delhi on Monday, the presiding officer said that as per the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, alderman are eligible to vote in the mayor and deputy mayor polls. According to the Act, ten people, over the age of 25 can be nominated to the corporation by the L-G, to assist the house in taking decisions of public importance. However, they allege that procedural norms were violated by the LG in choosing 10 BJP members as aldermen, who are expected to play a crucial role in determining who controls the MCD.
As the Assembly session began, 10 Delhi councilors nominated Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to vote in mayoral polls.
The Mayor elections have been stalled twice so far on January 6 and January 24, respectively. They were adjourned by the presiding officer without electing a mayor as the sessions were marred by the ruckus and acrimonious exchanges among the members of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Aam Aadmi Party.
