New Delhi: As February 4 marks World Cancer Day, World Health Organisation said that the disease is the second leading cause of death globally and was responsible for 9.6 million deaths in 2018. It further added that one in six deaths are due to cancer.
“Today is World Cancer Day. Few diseases reflect global inequities as starkly as breast cancer and cervical cancer. Nearly 80% of deaths from breast and cervical cancer ovvur in low and middle income countries”, tweeted WHO.
The estimated number of cancer cases in India in 2022 were 14,61,427. Sources reveal that one in every nine Indian is likely to develop cancer in his lifetime.
“Today on World Cancer Day we reiterate our commitment towards ensuring early detection and affordable treatment of cancer. Initiatives like Ayushman Bharat have strong emphasis on providing quality healthcare and ensuring cancer-free lives”, tweeted prime minister Narendra Modi.
International figures around the world tweeted to raise awareness in a bid to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. Ministry of Health & Family Welfare also tweeted to create awareness about the disease.
Among childhood cancer, lymphoid leukaemia is the leading site and cases of cancer are likely to increase n future. National Cancer Registry Programme is playing a crucial role in weaving plans against this menace in India.
