Kathmandu, Nepal: A 4.5 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal in the early morning hours of Tuesday as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). A tweet by the NCS team said, “Earthquake of Magnitude:4.5, Occurred on 08-11-2022, 04:37:27 IST, Lat: 28.57 & Long: 86.58, Depth: 100 Km, Location: 155km NE of Kathmandu, Nepal.”
This is not the first time that the neighboring country is waking up to such jolts. Nepal suffers earthquakes more often. This is the 4th time in the year that it has suffered such a jolt. The last earthquake on October 19 was of 5.1 magnitude that shook Kathmandu. The depth of the earthquake was about 10 kms below the ground level.
In another such disaster that occurred back on July 31, an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 again hit Kathmandu in the wee hours. The earthquake hit around the area of Martim Birta in the Khotang district. The National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre (NEMRC) reported this earthquake.
The worst quake this year was on April 25 when a high-intensity earthquake hit the capital again. The Richter scale measured a magnitude of 7.8 when the earthquake occurred between Nepal’s Pokhara city and the capital city Kathmandu. It affected lives and property massively. It was reported that almost 9000 people lost their lives in that disaster while around 22,000 people were injured in the quake.
Such earthquakes keep hitting Nepal more often now. The seismic experts suggest that the Indian plate in Nepal is subducted at a rate of 5 cm per year under the Eurasian plate. This forms the increasing height of the Himalayan young fold mountains that makes Nepal prone to such frequent earthquakes. No casualties were reported in today’s earthquake.
