London: The race to become the leader of the Conservative Party and the United Kingdom’s next prime minister ended on Friday. The results for the election will be announced at 5 pm (IST) on 5 September by returning officer Sir Graham Brady.

Sunak and Truss, have been in a fierce competition across the United Kingdom to win support from around 1,60,000 Conservative Party members as Boris Johnson announced resignation after revolt by Tory MPs. Truss leads the race to Downing street by her staunchly low-tax favouring scheme. While the British Indian former minister Sunak has pegged his campaign on getting a grip on soaring inflation as an immediate priority. Overall both the leaders have been hustled to tackle the cost-of-living crisis faced by the British public.

The online and postal ballots voting opened in early August. The new leader is expected to meet the Queen at her summer residence of Balmoral Castle in Scotland. The winner will also address questions in the House of Commons on Wednesday.

In the 2019 general elections former PM Bosris Johnson was elected with a thumping majority.
