Twitter floods with best wishes, as India secured its first gold at the CWG 2022 on Day 2.

Ace weightlifter Mirabhai Chanu came no less than a showstopper at the proudest moment for the Indian contingent at the Birmingham event on Saturday. Indeed weightlifting came much rewarding for India on Saturday.

Chanu lifted a total of 201 kg to win the yellow metal in women’s 49kg weightlifting event, which was India’s third medal of the day from the sport after Sanket Sargar (silver) and Gururaja (bronze) delivered earlier in the day. Chanu, who had won the gold medal at the 2018 CWG in Gold Coast in Australia, was miles ahead of the competition as she picked up 88kg in snatch and 113 kg in clean and jerk.

Assured of gold, she further went on to lift 113kg in her second attempt. She tried 119kg in her third, but could not complete the lift, but it hardly mattered.

Mauritius’ Roilya Ranaivosoa (76kg + 96kg), won silver while the third place was secured by Canada’s Hannah Kaminsky for lifting a total of 171kg (74kg + 97kg).
