New Delhi: Alt News Co-founder Mohammad Zubair who landed in jail last month over a controversial tweet posted four years back has knocked the Apex court. Zubair requested the top court to cancel six cases filed against him by Uttar Pradesh Police. Further, he has also sought the removal of SIT probing about these cases. Zubair, however, was granted an extension on his interim bail in a case registered in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh but he was not freed in other cases against him.
On Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Police formed an SIT to carry out a speedy probe in all the cases against Zubair and submit a charge sheet at the earliest. Meanwhile, Mohammad Zubair was arrested on June 27 by the Delhi Police over a four-year-old tweet. The tweet is basically a screenshot from a popular Hindi movie released in 1983 which sparked a row on social media.
While hearing the case on Tuesday, a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna allowed four weeks for UP Police to file a response on Zubair’s plea. The next hearing in this matter is scheduled for September 7th.
