New Delhi: As the rains continue to wreak havoc across the western belt of the country, the Indian Army under ”Operation Varsha” mobilised teams to Maharashtra to relocate and avert untoward mishaps. A total of 15 relief and rescue teams comprising troops from Aundh Military Station and Bombay Engineer Group based at Pune have been deployed overnight in affected areas of Ratnagiri, Kolhapur and Sangli districts of the state.
Over 130 people have died in rain-related incidents, including multiple landslides. At least 84,452 people, including over 40,000 in the Kolhapur district, were moved to safer places.
The mobilised teams are said to have been deployed on requests by the civil administration. The teams will be operating actively in the districts of Ratnagiri, Raigad, Pune, Satara and Kolhapur and Sangli.
On Monday CM Shinde with Deputy CM took stock of the rains in Gadchiroli. On Friday announced a compensation of 5 lakh each for the families of those who lost their lives in the landslides caused by torrential rainfall in various parts of the state.
