New Delhi: In a shocking incident in Tokyo on Friday, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot by a man while campaigning in Western Japan. The former PM was quickly admitted to a hospital in a critical situation. PM Fumio Kishida earlier informed the press that doctors were working hard to save Abe. Later in the day, Abe was declared dead by the doctors despite their best efforts. Political leaders from around the world expressed their condolences on this shocking incident.

The accused, Yamagami, has been arrested and in his statement to the police, he said that he was dissatisfied with the former Japanese Prime Minister and targeted him with an intention to kill. Indian Leaders and State Heads took to their Twitter handles and described this incident as an unfortunate one.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the sad news and wrote on his Twitter handle that he is saddened by the demise of his dearest friend.

In another tweet, the Indian PM declared July 9 as the National Mourning Day in the memory of Shinzo Abe.
