Lieutenant-General Mohan Subramanian of the Indian Army has been appointed as the new Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Lt. Gen. Subramanian succeeds Lt. Gen. Shailesh Tinaikar, who was also from the Indian Army. Secretary-General has expressed that he is grateful to Lt.Gen. Tinaikar for his tireless dedication, effective leadership, and invaluable service. India has contributed 2385 troops and 30 police personnel to UNMISS.
The appointment was confirmed through a tweet by UNMISS that read, “Yesterday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian of India”.
The full press release said that “Mr. Subramanian has a distinguished military career with the Indian Army spanning over 36 years. Most recently he had served as the General Officer Commanding, Military Region (Operational and Logistic Readiness Zone)”.
Among other appointments within the Indian Armed Forces, he has served as the Additional Director General for Procurement and Equipment Management at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defense (Army 2019-2021). He has served as India’s Defence Attache to Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia (2008-12) and a staff officer for the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone.
