China: The Chaba Typhoon while making landfall in South China ripped apart a ship endangering around 24 members of the crew, officials said.
The typhoon reportedly wrecked an engineering vessel that was 160 nautical miles southwest of Hongkong and abandoned a ship, a local media house reported. Three survivors rescued by the officials were rushed to the hospital. They said the waves washed away the other crew members before the first helicopter arrived for evacuation.
The Typhoon earlier formed in the central part of the South China Sea on Saturday afternoon and made landfall in Guangdong Province at around 3 pm. According to the local meteorological department, the typhoon will be moving northwest at a speed of 15to 20 km per hour, passing through Maomong and enter Guangxi Zhuang tonight.
Intense downpours and rainstorms are expected to lash the western part of the Pearl River Delta over the weekend. Emergency services are upgraded to Level-II. Earlier on Monday, China’s National Metereological Center renewed its yellow alert for rainstorms in several parts of the country.
