India’s first sologamy is to be held on June 11 where a Gujarat woman is set to marry herself in an expression of self-love Kshama Bindu.

A native of Bihar, now living in Gujarat Kshama says she used to think about living alone since childhood and this thought of her was even stronger when she saw the award-winning Canadian web series’ Anne With an E” based on young abandoned children, gender inequality and other social issues.

Bindu graduated from Sayaji Rao University in sociology and is employed as a senior recruiter in a private company. Despite both parents and a sibling, she has been residing alone in Vadodara for the past 4 years. However, her parents have given her the consent for this marriage she said.

Calling it an “act of self-acceptance”, the bride-to-be said, “Self-marriage is a commitment to be there for yourself and unconditional love for oneself. People marry someone they love. I love myself and hence this wedding.”

The wedding is scheduled to take place as per the Indian traditions in the local Mahadev temple of course without a groom. Shama would take vows that she prepared and has also planned a two-week honeymoon break for herself in Goa.

Self-marriage or Sologamy had become famous in 2003 in ‘Sex in the City’, where the main character mused about herself being self married. The trend has been popular globally since then.
