Andhra Pradesh: A mob of angry protestors in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday set the state Transport Minister’s residence on fire over the proposed renaming of the newly created Konaseema district as BR Ambedkar Konaseema district. Besides this, a police van and an educational institution’s bus were also set ablaze, while several policemen were injured during stone-pelting. The Minister alleged that the opposition had instigated the arson.

Over 20 police officials have been injured during the incident sources added. It is learnt that the Konaseems Sadhna Samiti objected to the proposal and staged protests seeking to submit a memorandum to the district Collector against the renaming.

On April 4th, the new Konaseema district was announced out of the erstwhile East Godavari district. Following this the administration last week had given a preliminary notification seeking objections from the people if any.
