Shanghai: The National Commission in China on Wednesday, reported 7 more virus-related deaths in Shanghai, raising the total count in the city to 17 as authorities struggled to curb the spread despite gruelling restrictions. The deaths as per the official report were cases with underlying co-morbidities of lung cancer and diabetes. The recent deaths included adults above 70 years majorly, officials added. With this, the death toll in the country since coronavirus emerged in Wuhan in December 2019 has reached 4,655, according to the official data
The Chinese mainland on Tuesday reported 2,753 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, of which 2,494 were in Shanghai, according to the National Health Commission’s report. Apart from the financial hub, 14 other provincial-level regions in China saw new local COVID-19 cases, including 133 in the northeastern province of Jilin and two in Beijing, the commission report said. It said that 30,773 people were undergoing treatment in hospitals across the country.
The financial capital of the country is reeling under gruelling conditions for the past three weeks after authorities observed a drastic rise in the daily cases. The lockdown has taken a social and economic toll, with residents voicing their fury on social media over shortage of food and essential supplies.
