New Delhi: India on Sunday registered 3,116 fresh coronavirus cases in the lowest daily rise in 676 days (since May 2020). The active caseload currently stands at 38,069 with the active cases constituting 0.09 per cent of the total cases (4,29,90,991), the health ministry said in its daily bulletin. The country saw 47 deaths in the last 24 hours, the latest data shows.

The drop in daily cases comes weeks after the country was hit by a third wave, driven by the Omicron variant. While the weekly positivity rate currently stands at 0.50 per cent, the daily positivity rate stands at .41 per cent. In the last 24 hours, 5,559 recoveries were recorded, taking the overall recoveries to 4,24,37,072. India has given over 180.13 crore doses of vaccine against Covid so far.

Amid the Omicron-driven wave, top cities in the country had witnessed a big spike in cases, including Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. This came ahead of the five state elections, triggering huge concerns. In the weeks that followed, the cases dropped amid strict restrictions. India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7th, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23rd, 40 lakh on September 5th and 50 lakh on September 16th.

It went past 60 lakh on September 28th, 70 lakh on October 11th, crossed 80 lakh on October 29th, 90 lakh on November 20th and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19th. The country crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4th and three crore on June 23rd last year.
