Assam: Counting of votes for the Assam Municipal elections is underway. As per the state election commission, the BJP is leading in 296 wards of the total 977 wards of 80 municipalities, followed by Others in 62 wards and Congress 33. Polls for 80 Municipal Boards in Assam comprising 977 wards across the state were held on March 6th Sunday. 

According to trends until 10:30 am it is observed that the saffron party leads in 72 municipal bodies while Congress and the Asom Gana Parishad are leading in one each.

The overall turnout for Municipal elections 2022, recorded a 70 per cent turnover, with no untoward incidents and no-repoll requests from any part of the state. Chandan Kalita, Presiding Officer, had informed that EVMs were used for the first time instead of ballot papers in these elections. 

More than 16 lakh voters comprising 8.32 lakh males, 8.41 lakh females and 17 transgenders had exercised their franchise to decide the fate of 2,532 candidates. The fate of nearly 2,532 candidates in the fray would be decided where the ruling BJP fielded the maximum number of nominees, followed by Congress with 706 candidates and AGP with 243.
