New Delhi: India recorded 3,993 fresh infections in the past 24 hours, lowest in 662 days. The recovery rate at 98.68 per cent accounted for 8,055 recuperations in the last 24 hours taking the total recoveries to 4,24,06,150. The daily positivity rate stood at 0.46 per cent.

The number of active cases stood at 49,948 accounting for 0.12 per cent of the total number of cases. The active cases reported a drop of 4,170 in the last 24 hours. However, the mortality rate stood at 1.20 per cent recorded 108 fatalities taking the cumulative death toll to 5,15,210.

With the administration of 21.34 lakh vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 179.13 crore according to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

More than 6 million people worldwide have died from Covid-19 two years after the novel pathogen started spreading globally, despite the distribution of vaccines that slashed fatality rates across the globe. The latest 1 million recorded deaths came more slowly than the previous intervals. It took about 125 days to go from 5 million deaths to 6 million, compared to 117 days to hit the 5-million mark and less than 90 days each to reach the 3- and 4-million ones.

United States alone accounted for 16 per cent deaths in the recent surge while India recorded 9 per cent rise.
