Washington: Amidst the unabated COVID-19 resurgence fuelled by the South African variant, the US health agency recorded over 1 million new cases after setting a global record. A total of 1, 060,747 fresh infections were reported across the country.

Meanwhile, the White House began its advanced testing program from 19th January, where people across the country could now procure at home COVID-19 test kits for free. Registering on the government website, COVIDTests.gov, individuals can order four at home tests per household, irrespective of their citizenship. Authorities also announced the mass distribution of 400 million N95 masks for free at pharmacies and community health centres.

A  recent update reported nearly 9.5 million infections amongst children since the onset of the pandemic. Since the detection of the first highly transmissible case of Omicron roughly 5.4 million COVID-19 cases have been documented in a week from January 10.
