15th January 2020, saw the resignation of ace skipper Virat Kohli. The confirmation of this came as a statement through Twitter. The relinquishing comes a day after the defeat to South Africa in the three-match Test Series.
The official statement read- It’s been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance every day to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test Captain of India, it’s now.
Highlighting the support he received throughout his journey, Captain Kohli also thanked the BCCI and his teammates in the official announcement. The talismanic player said he always gave his 120 per cent on the cricket field. “There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey, but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief. I have always believed in giving my 120 per cent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it’s not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to my team,” Kohli added.
Earlier in 2021, he had announced to resign from the T20 captaincy post the T20 World Cup 2021. Later in December, Virat Kohli was sacked as the ODI captain as BCCI wanted one captain for the limited-overs format, where Rohit Sharma took over as India’s full-time white-ball captain
