New Delhi: India recorded 7,974fresh infections in the past 24 hours. The recovery rate at 98.38 per cent accounted for 7,948 recuperations in the last 24 hours taking the total recoveries to 3,41,54,879. The daily positivity rate stood at 0.57 per cent, less than 2 per cent for 73 consecutive days.

The number of active cases stood at 87,245 accounting for 0.25 per cent of the total number of cases. The active cases reported a decline by 317 in the last 24 hours. However, the mortality rate recorded at 1.37 per cent reported a spike in deaths recording 343 fatalities, taking the cumulative death toll to 4,76,478.

Maharashtra, with the highest number of Omicron cases, reported four new cases on Wednesday taking the state’s tally to 32. Meanwhile, few states also reported first case of Omicron taking the tally to 73. In West Bengal, a seven-year-old boy, resident of Murshidabad district who recently returned from Abu Dhabi via Hyderabad, tested positive for Omicron. Whereas in Tamil Nadu, a 47-year-old man who had arrived from Nigeria, along with six of his family members a few days ago, has tested positive for the new variant. In Telangana, a 24-year-old woman from Kenya and a 23-year-old man from Somalia, who landed in Hyderabad on December 12, have tested positive for the variant, a Telangana health official said on Wednesday.

As per the statistics reported to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, so far 135.25 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in the country, including 60.12 lakh doses given in the last 24 hours.
