Kolkata: A 7-year-old boy has tested positive for the Omicron variant of the coronavirus disease in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, becoming the state’s first case of the new variant, the state health department informed on Wednesday. Both the parents have been tested negative. Reportedly, the child has arrived from Hyderabad. Earlier in the day, 3 persons including 2 foreign nationals and a child also tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Hyderabad.

The first person is a 24-year-old woman, a Kenyan national, who landed at the international airport here on December 12, Telangana Director of Public Health, G Srinivasa Rao told reporters. The other is a 23-year-old man from Somalia. Both are asymptomatic, he said. The two persons were diagnosed with Omicron infection during genome sequencing. Dr Rao said, “The foreign nationals will be quarantined in Hyderabad and after their recovery, they will be sent back to their respective countries. They were in the city for some personal work.”
