India recorded 8,439 fresh infections in the past 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry reported.


The recovery rate at 98.36 per cent accounted for 9,525  recuperations in the last 24 hours taking the total recoveries to 3,40,89,137. The daily positivity rate stood at 0.7  per cent, less than 2 per cent for the last 65 days.


The active caseload stands at 93,733 accounting for less than 1 per cent of the total number of cases. 1,281 active cases were reported in the last 24 hours. However, the mortality rate recorded at 1.37 per cent reported 195 fatalities, taking the cumulative death toll to 4,73,952.

The Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus is becoming the cause of concern as World Health Organisation (WHO) has flagged it as a “variant of concern”. Based on an initial assessment, WHO has announced that Omicron has a lot of potential for re-infection. On the brighter side, people shall be more attentive towards strengthening their immunity.
