Idukki: Official sources stated the water level in Idukki reservoir continued to rise on Tuesday morning as a result of heavy rainfall in its catchment areas and the opening of shutters at the Mullaperiyar dam, according to official sources. Idukki district officials claimed the Cheruthoni dam’s shutter No 3 was opened by 40 cm at 6 a.m., but it was lifted to 60 cm by 8.30 a.m. The water level in the reservoir in Idukki has reached 2401.58 feet, prompting the Idukki district government to issue an orange alert. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu has closed eight of the Mullaperiyar Dam’s shutters, which were opened on Monday night, triggering a flood in the Periyar river.
IMD predicts light rain in certain regions of the city and suburbs over the next 48 hours, with partly overcast skies. Temperatures may reach a high of 31°C and a low of 24°C. A meteorologist said, “Once the system over the Bay dissipates, easterlies which got blocked will be back. The entry of warm moisture-laden easterlies entering the land which is cool in the night will lead to convection. This will bring rainfall for us.”
On Monday morning, certain portions of north and south Chennai witnessed brief showers, but the majority of the city’s neighbourhoods were gloomy. Since November 30, the city’s primary observatories in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam have generally reported zero rain. The system that developed over the Bay and grew into a cyclone, according to officials, stopped the passage of easterly winds into the land.
