Canada: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won a third term in snap election but fell short of recovering the majority he sought, forcing him to rely on minor parties in another fractured legislature.
As of 1:40 AM Tuesday in Ottawa, Trudeau’s Liberal Party was elected and was leading in 156 of the 338 seats in the House of Commons, little changed from the previous election in 2019. The main opposition Conservatives, led by Erin O’Toole, gained 122 seats, one more than they did in the previous election. The Liberals received only 31.8 per cent of the national vote, according to more than 90% of polls. Whereas, the Conservatives received 34.1 per cent of the vote.
While Trudeau is likely to be able to carry out his left-wing program with the assistance of other parties in parliament, he lacks the wide public support required to govern alone. His party lost the popular vote to the conservatives for the second time in a row and only won because of strong potential in Toronto, Montreal, and other cities.
Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada showed gratitude towards the citizens through twitter said –“Thank you for casting your vote”, for putting your trust in the Liberal team, for choosing a brighter future. We’re going to finish the fight against COVID. And we’re going to move Canada forward. For everyone.”
