Tokyo: Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian to get the country its first gold medal. The 23 year old Javelin star registered a best attempt of 87.59m to finish ahead of Czech Republic duo Jakub Vadlejch and Vitezslav Vesely.
Chopra began with a throw of 87.03m in the first round, however he staged a throw of 87.58m in the second shot. Despite making a foul in the fourth and the fifth attempt, Chopra still maintained the lead and struck gold.
Meanwhile, Wrestler Bajrang Punia bought India yet another Bronze after he won the men’s 65kg Match against Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan in the repechage round.
With this victory Punia joined Indian athletes squad who achieved Bronze in their Summer Olympics 2020 journey.
Former Asian Games gold medalist Bajrang dominated the boat from start to finish, which ended in a 8-0 scoreline in favour of the 27-year-old Indian .
The Indian wrestler went into the Tokyo Games as one of the country’s best bets to win a gold medal but a loss to Haji Aliyev of Azerbaijan in the semi-finals ended that dream.
