Afghanistan: Weeks after the withdrawal of the US troops from the war-torn land, violence in has escalated as the Taliban intensified their offensive actions against civilians, Afghan defence and security forces.
Clashes between the security forces and Taliban spiked in key areas of Laskhargah city, capital of Helmand province.
According to a local reporter, clashes continued in Laskhargah city in District 1 near the police headquarters and the provincial governor’s office on Sunday.
Security forces inform that many parts of the city have been taken over by Taliban in the recent weeks. Helmand’s Members of Parliament (MPs) reported that the city will be out of the government’s control if it does not receive support.
“The fighting has reached District 1 and is 100 meters or 200 meters away from the provincial governor’s compound. Fighting is underway to capture the base in the province and the people are concerned,” reported a local reporter as quoted by Ghulam Wali Afghan, an MP from Helmand.
Meanwhile, the Taliban also deployed troops in Herat bordering Iran on Sunday.
Since the withdrawal of the US troops, nearly 70 districts, as well as the Spin Boldak border town, fell prey to the Taliban’s Supremacy in July. As per the figures recorded in July, 313 civilians and 239 security forces were wounded in security incidents and Taliban attacks.
