Olympics: According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government the province reported 1,763 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday against 1,008 cases reported last Sunday. On the second day of the competition of the Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) claimed that there have been 137 new COVID-19 cases linked to the Tokyo Games.
Additionally, many athletes have dropped out of the Tokyo 2020 due to the positive COVID-19 test. Nearly 13 athletes were tested positive in Japan while 12 tested positive prior to their departure for Japan.
This year the Olympics are introducing four new sports; skateboarding, surfing, karate, and sport climbing. Organisers hope that the events will encourage young viewers to watch the Games. Skateboarding made its debut on Sunday with a men’s street competition. The game witnessed high-flying tricks and stunts with the astounding age-range of competitors from 12 to 47 years.
In total there were 18 medal events held on Sunday with Team USA clinching four gold medals. China is leading the medal tally list with a total of 11 medals in their bucket; six Golds, two Silvers, and four Bronzes. Followed by Japan, the hosting country that has a total of six medals; five Golds and one Silver. The United States of America (USA) stands high at third position with 10 medals; four Golds, two Silvers, and four Bronzes.
Interestingly, USA men’s basketball team suffered its first Olympic defeat since 2004 falling to France (83-76). While USA will face Iran in their next game on Wednesday, France will have to dace Czech Republic.
