New Delhi: The UP Police has booked a case against Twitter India MD Manish Maheshwari in connection with a case over a distorted map of India on the microblogging site.

 The FIR was lodged at the Khurja Nagar police station in Bulandshahr district on Monday evening on the basis of a complaint by an office-bearer of right-wing Bajrang Dal. 

Along with Twitter India MD, the FIR also names News Partnerships Head Amrita Tripathi as accused and has been charged under Indian Penal Code section 505 (2) (public mischief). The accused have also been charged under IT Act Section 74 i.e.-publication for a fraudulent purpose. 

This development comes after a distorted map of India surfaced on Twitter Monday evening. The map showed the Union Territories of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir outside India. The distorted map, which appeared under the career section of the Twitter website under the header ‘Tweep Life”, blew a row of anguish amongst netizens as they demanded strict actions against the microblogging site that has been flouting rules for a long time.

The UP government had earlier lodged an FIR against Twitter MD Manish and had summoned him for questioning in regards to the Loni Assault Case. The police claimed the video was shared to spark communal unrest.  Along with Twitter Inc, the FIR named Twitter Communications India, a news website, journalists and three Congress leaders Salman Nizami, Maskoor Usmani, Shama Mohamed.
