A Delhi court has acquitted five accused in connection with the riots in Northeast Delhi in which the Muslims’ New Delhi central mosque was allegedly targeted and torched by the mob in 2020.

The Karkardooma court said that the prosecution could not substantiate the involvement of the accused in view of many inconsistencies in the evidence led by the witnesses and flaws in the presentation of CCTV footage as evidence.

In a fresh judgment that was issued on October 31, Additional Sessions Judge Parveen Singh said the records of two police officers, who appeared as eye-witnesses, do not match that of a resident opposite the mosque.

CCTV Evidence Found Inadmissible

The court also determined the CCTV tape the prosecution has used to prove the case were not admissible as evidence because the certificates accompanying the CCTV tape failed to meet legal requirements.

Five men charged with rioting, unlawful assembly, property damage and setting fire to the mosque were being held here: ankit, Sourabh Sharma, Rohit, Rahul Kumar and Sachin.

The court, however, saved all five men the trouble of defense and found them each not guilty of any of the charges.
