DISHA, a student organisation which protested against the Special Intensive Revision process and wanted it to be scrapped, called the demonstration.

The SIR exercise has become a major political agenda and public discussion with number of Opposition parties and organisations questioning the implementation of the exercise. The student protest was the latest in the ongoing anti-government strike in the national capital on the topic.

The incident at Minto Road pitched in the midst of growing activities in Delhi as protests and political rallies were held in the city around demands for the Election Commission, electoral rolls revision etc.

But the students did not get past the police when they blocked their advance to Connaught Place and arrested them.
