Due to the violent incidents on the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi, the classes for the institution have been suspended. The clash between students demanding restoration of student union elections on the campus of JMI and paired security guards led to its suspension of classes yesterday.
Protesters began campyling when guards were tasked with taking down tents set up by protesters at the demonstration, including some protesting in a hunger strike. The clash between the two heightened rowdescsts on the university campus in south Delhi.
Students Demand Restoration of Union Elections
The protesters want the reinstatement of women’s students’ union (JMISU) of Jamia Millia Islamia that was banned in 2006 after the campus was marred by violence, the alleged effects of which were said to have made it difficult for the university to conduct classes.
The students have wanted the reintroduction of an elected student body and advocating for students to be involved in university again. The latest row has again reminded them of the demands on the university and caused it to hold classes online.
Registrar Blames Congress Leaders
Jamia Registrar Mahtab Alam Rizvi claimed that the campus visit by two Congress MPs, Imran Pratapgarhi and Imran Masood, a day before the incident had strained the relations of the students.
The leaders themselves were able to enter the campus by licking the university wall and this polluted the environment of the university,” Rizvi said. He also claimed they enabled pupils to be part of political messages.
May be made by the University registrar, but not independently confirmed in the information provided.
Complaint Filed With Delhi Police
A complaint had been filed with the Delhi Police after the incident, Rizvi confirmed.
The University’s announcement about conducting classes online is seen as a sign of worsening conflict over student union issue. The immediate issue is to keep order on campus and to follow through with the negotiation of student representation as it unfolds.
The steps that will come next will depend on the next steps taken by the university in response to the protesters’ demands and what steps are taken by the police in response to the complaint.
