An Armed Force man of the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) who was deployed to perform duties on the occasion of Dussehra and Navratri was allegedly found drunk and misbehaved with Bajrang Dal members in Korba in Chhattisgarh, triggering a controversy.
The jawan – known as Pawan Kumar – attempted to stop a vehicle near phase-1, took off the key and shouted at the people inside, the complaint said. The group was reportedly touring the pandals at celebration of Durga Puja.
Fellow team members got to near the jawan, but they stopped their auto and apparently took the keys. They suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol, following which an argument broke out and people at the scene began protesting.
The presence of the crowd at the scene called for their presence, and this led to the authorities intervening. The jawan was then driven to Civil Lines where he was subjected to a preliminary examination and medical test to determine his condition.
Police also informed the concerned CAF department about the incident. The department will review the matter and act upon it following the relevant rules.
City Superintendent of Police Prateek Chaturvedi said the jawan has been put up for a medical check-up. He stated a Letter would be sent to the CAF department and that further action would be taken amounting to the Letter was sent to the department.
The incident happened during the festive season in the period of Dussehra and Navratri when there are huge gatherings of devotees visiting the Durga Puja pandals while security forces were deployed to carry out festive security duties in these areas.
The path will be determined from results of the medical investigation (and investigations by authorities) following that to determine if any further action is warranted. There are no confirmed facts in the information that state that the offender was intoxicated, or if they did steal the key, there was no fact provided that they were verbally abusive.
