Israel’s military is strengthening troops deployments on all fronts in advance of its elections on October 27, because of a growing risk for escalation along the country’s borders. The decision was announced by army chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir on Wednesday as he travels around the occupied West Bank.
During the election period, the risk of security incidents and potential escalation increased, Zamir said an Israeli military statement. As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fights for his life of office, he has an extremely close-run contest.
With the realization of more alerts on all types across the board coupled with the sensitivity of this time, the risk of escalation has heightened, “Zamir” said in the statement.
He also acknowledged that the military had beefed up their combat capability in various locations and increased their preparedness. The army is also getting ready for the scenario of an opponent making a surprise attack.
Zamir told reporters there had to be a heightened sense of awareness, and the army was ready for a wide-scale offensive against anyone attempting to create harm to Israeli civilians.
The release follows the recent announcement for Israel’s attitude celebrating the third anniversary of the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. In the attack, Hamas militants fired at several different locations – including a music festival – in Israel, using dead bodies, paragliders and vehicles. The attack sparked a new round of tensions across the region and a Gaza war.
Despite a cease-fire agreement hammered out by the United States between Israel and Hamas a year ago, things in Gaza are still shaky, the report said. More than 60 per cent of the destroyed Palestinian land remains in Israeli hands and Israeli bombing has gone on.
The troop escalation is in response to Israel’s significantly heightened security pose ahead of the election. Zamir’s comments suggest the military is readying itself for potential actions on several fronts and which could pose a risk to Israeli civilians.
