Delhi: Four men who allegedly beat students and physically assaulted women while leading the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest on DDU Marg in New Delhi on October 10 have been arrested by the police, officers said Sunday.

The police arrests came on the back of a social media video of a mob allegedly beating young students and pushing women on a stretch of DDU Marg, an area under the Delhi police station of Kamla Market. There is also a shot that seems to capture a police officer at the location.

The accused were identified by a top police officer as Raman Saini (50), Vivekanand aka Vivek (32), Kapil Kumar (27) and Ravinder Singh aka Govind Hindu (35). The four allegedly belonged to the right-wing outfit Hindu Raksha Dal.

Police sources said on the first day of the protest, when students were trying to meet on various venues of the national capital, the video was shared in social media groups. Initially the exact whereabouts of the incident were not known.

Later, they discovered the location during their security verification and checks as part of the preparations for the protest, the sources said.

According to police, there was no complaint filed about the incident. After being made aware of the video, however, officers took suo motu cognisance. According to anonymous inputs, the men reportedly involved may try to evade police action by moving out of the Delhi-NCR area.

The four men were traced and later arrested, said the senior officer.

The allegedly assaulted man was among the many who were detained during the CJP protest on CJP Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar who alleged that electoral rolls were being Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

The video has since gained popularity on social media outlets of people involved with political groups and personalities. The recording has been shared by various handlebands of IYC, AISA and CJP.

The allegations against the arrested men are subject to the legal process.
