Hasirani Rath and Shankharavh Sarkar (both of Bharatiya Janata Party) have swept the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly by poll in West Bengal by large margins.

Rath got 75.94% votes in Nandigram with 164,427 votes out of total votes polled. She polled 41,674 votes and 19.25% votes to Congress candidate Milan Pradhan, who received 1,22,753 votes.

Rath had garnered wide attention as she is the mother of Chandranath Rath, a close friend of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari who was reportedly shot dead on May 6th, hours after the BJP won the state Assembly prize.

BJP candidate Shankharavh Sarkar won Rejinagar with a poll victory of 1,29,914 votes. He has defeated Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) contender Golam Nabi Azad, Robin, with her 54,098 votes. Sarkar’s victory was by 75,816 votes.

Considering the success of Humayun Kabir of AJUP in both the bypolls for Rejinagar and Naoda as they rallied to the respective locations in the 2026 Assembly polls, the AJUP decided to hive off the Naoda bypoll and keep Rejinagar by itself.

The Nandigram by-election was called due to Adhikari quitting the seat to save his Congress home of Bhabanipur in the Assembly elections from Mamata Banerjee.

Both pitched were watched for being a preliminary election test in the wake of the BJP’s win in the Bengal state, ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state, as provided.

Of course, Nandigram’s importance in the political game has come into focus because of Rath’s win, with the area being linked to Adhikari and the broader political battle in West Bengal.
