In view of the ongoing allegations against ACP Vivek Bhagat, the Delhi Police has issued guidelines for journalists covering protests.

In a post on Monday evening, the Delhi Police took to X, writing, “The story matters, so does how you get it.” Sharing the list of guidelines for journalists, they added the hashtag #EthicsOfJournalism.

As per the guidelines issued by the Delhi Police, all journalists assigned to cover protests are advised to carry valid ID cards issued by their respective organisations or valid PIB or DIP accreditation cards. These cards are to be kept visibly displayed at all times to facilitate identification by law enforcement agencies present at the site.

Besides, their presence is expected no to obstrucy police operations or the movement of law enforcement personnel. At times when tense situations prevail, journalists present at the site are instructed to maintain a reasonable and safe distance while covering and recording the proceedings. They should position themselves in a manner that clearly distinguishes them from the protesters.

The guidelines come after three women journalists accused Delhi Police officers of sexual harassment during the October 3 protests against alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s functioning and the SIR of electoral rolls.

The development also comes after officials withheld ACP Vivek Bhagat’s additional duty charge as Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police amid the allegations.
