Professor Suryanarayana Doolla from IIT Bombay, who has allegedly been involved in the death of 22-year-old student Sahil Wakode, has been placed on leave, sources said on Wednesday. A police case has been registered against Doolla on various charges, such as abetment to suicide and caste discrimination.
Doolla also is expected to attend the police investigation. His deputies were dismissed from the posts of deans of administrative affairs at IIT-Bombay earlier this week after the students protested against his death of Wakode.
Sahil Wakode Death Case Under Investigation
On September 18, second-year BTech student from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, Wakode was discovered dead in his hostel room. He had been blocked earlier this semester following a protest over him allegedly using a mobile phone during a test.

The footage has been booked in by the Mumbai Crime Branch as part of its probe.
Wakode’s family has claimed that he has been subject to harassment on the basis of his caste. His mother, Sonali Wakode said, told the family that her son had complained about attack and caste-based remarks – this took place for several months. These allegations are part of the ongoing police investigation.
IIT Bombay Retracts Earlier ChatGPT Statement
This controversy also got a big boost after IIT Bombay issued the apologies for the previous communication on the death of Wakode. The institute initially stated he was caught using ChatGPT during the exam, and then said that the story of his death was still being investigated.
In the meanwhile, the faculty groups from various IITs have showed their support and demanded a fair investigation for Doolla. Students groups have also split on the action to take against him saying that he should be suspended as a precaution while emphasising that he should not be guilty until the investigation process is final by all governments.
Mumbai Crime Branch is left to continue its investigation of the murderer’s motive with CCTV footage and the statements and evidence.
