Punjab Police on Saturday arrested former Union Minister and BJP chief Ravneet Bittu for protesting outside the convoy of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in Ludhiana. The incident happened outside the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), when Mann arrived to attend the Kisan Mela.
Bittu had come for eggs and tomatoes at PAU gate with an incident which had occurred with his convoy a day before. Bittu had said that his convoy was surrounded by eggs, tomatoes and stones thrown at them when he reached Pathankot to participate in the BJP’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’ on Friday.
Ravneet Bittu explained his protest, saying that he had arrived to “return” the eggs and tomatoes. He also stated that the BJP would continue to stage protests against the Punjab government and its leaders saying that protests would continue to be a part of its democratic response.
Bittu and his supporters moved towards the area as the Chief Minister’s motorcade is on the move then police intervene. He was arrested on the ground, and pulled away, according to reports. Punjab Police said his arrest took place after he allegedly threw eggs and tomatoes at Mann’s convoy.
The incident happened a day after Bittu had issued allegations against those allegedly supporting the ruling Aam Aadmi Party over the arrest of his convoy near Batala. While Bittu had claimed that a large mob surrounded his cars and started hurl eggs and stones, the AAP has not yet been proved by those assertions to be responsible for the attack.
Ravneet Bittu stated the BJP will continue to raise matters relating to Punjab and protests be in lieu of Government programmes and offices as and when needed. Political tensions are further rising between the BJP and the Punjab government following the twin events, a day apart.
