Russian President Vladimir Putin will come to New Delhi later this week for the BRICS Summit and meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bilateral talks on both sides. Putin, the Russian president, was confirmed as visiting on Tuesday, by the Kremlin.
It is believed that the two leaders will talk about India-Russia relations and important global developments, Peskov said. This is the final part of the meeting in which Putin will update PM Modi on the current development of Ukraine crisis, he added.
During the virtual presentation in Moscow, Peskov told the Indian media that the relations between the two leaders were “close and pragmatic.” The two leaders have started regular personal contacts and are able to talk in a constructive and open fashion about sensitive matters,” he said.
Peskov said that his meeting with Vladimir Putin was to be held in the context of the BRICS Summit formats and will also have a good bilateral part with Modi present. He underscored the possibility for the two countries to find new avenues of cooperation through the leadership-level contact.
India, as the chairperson for 2026, is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on 12th and 13th September. The summit will gather leaders of countries members of the BRICS alliance, and also the invitees for outreach.
It will be an opportunity for the leaders of the countries participating in the summit to discuss enhanced cooperation between them on areas of interest and common concern, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said. They will share opinions on world and regional events of shared interest as well.
In the context of the current geopolitical tensions and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Putin’s trip and his meeting with Modi are anticipated to garner significant attention. The bilateral talks may be a chance for India and Russia to commit to resuming their traditional cooperation and to discuss matters influencing their broader strategic interests.
