Ramanuj Goswami was produced before a court after being remanded to seven days of police custody in connection with the alleged killing of his 25 year old wife in Guwahati.
While responding to questions from reporters in Assamese, Goswami allegedly admitted to killing his wife and said he would kill the person he referred to as his “sugar daddy” after his release from jail. When journalists repeatedly pressed him to reveal the individual’s identity, he became angry and behaved rudely towards members of the media. He later told reporters, “I have no regrets, no apologies.”
Goswami surrendered before the police late on Sunday after remaining away from the residence for nearly two days. Police are investigating the alleged motive behind the crime and reconstructing the sequence of events. Investigators suspect that Goswami attacked his Riya Talukdar with a sharp weapon following an altercation. They are also attempting to establish the identity of the person he referred to as his “sugar daddy” and determine the circumstances surrounding the remark.
The incident came to light on September 6 after neighbours complained of a foul smell emanating from the couple’s apartment. Residents told police that they had not seen the newly married couple for two days and that their mobile phones were switched off when they tried to contact them after noticing the smell.
Police subsequently broke open the door of the apartment and found the woman’s body inside. According to investigators, the woman’s fingers had been partially severed, and the body had begun decomposing. Her head was missing from the scene.
During a search of the apartment, police recovered the severed head from a refrigerator, where it had allegedly been placed inside a polythene bag. Following the recovery, police launched a search for Goswami, who had been absconding and later surrendered on Sunday.
Talukdar’s body and the severed head have been sent for post-mortem examination.
