India and Japan are all set to lock horns in their maiden T20 clash ahead of the Asian Games 2026. The two teams, who have never faced each other in cricket before, will compete on September 22 at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture.
However, talks over the broadcaster for the historic cricket match are still underway, with local broadcasters reportedly scrambling to find a partner.
According to a report, the Japan Cricket Association is in talks with ITW Universe to secure the rights. Since the match is set to be held just two days before the start of the Asian Games, logistics have become a major challenge for broadcasters.
While the TV broadcasting deal is yet to be finalised, it has also been reported that the match could be streamed live on YouTube.
In India, FanCode is in the broadcasting mix for the T20 international match, having worked extensively with the JCA in the past. ITW, meanwhile, is in discussions with Star, Sony and Zee over broadcasting the match.
It must be noted that the women’s cricket final will also be held in Japan at Korogi Athletic Park in Nishinomiya, Aichi, just an hour after the Indian men’s match begins. The scheduling of the two matches could create a major challenge for potential broadcasters, particularly as the Indian women’s team eyes a podium finish at the Asian Games.
The fixture carries significance well beyond logistics. It formally launches the Sports 75 initiative, which aims to celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan, giving the match added symbolic importance.
For cricket, the fixture offers a foothold in a region where the sport has limited visibility. For India and Japan, it represents another opportunity to deepen bilateral ties, with India’s push to host the 2036 Olympics adding an extra layer of significance to the timing.
