Heavy rains battered several parts of Delhi and adjoining areas causing waterlogging, disrupting traffic prompting the Met department to issue a red alert. Several airlines have issued advisories to passengers ahead of scheduled flights at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Airport authorities have said flight operations were normal as of Saturday morning. In an advisory issued at 10:30 a.m., GMR, the airport operator of IGI Airport, said inclement weather was expected in the vicinity of the airport based on the India Meteorological Department’s forecast, but operations were currently continuing normally.
India’s largest airline operator, IndiGo, issued an advisory stating that adverse weather conditions in Delhi could delay its flights and in-flight operations. The airline asked passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport. It also advised travellers to allow additional time for their journey as waterlogging and slow road movement could affect access to the airport.
Air India also warned passengers that flight operations to and from Delhi would be affected due to the adverse weather.
Localities including Geeta Colony and Akbar Road witnessed light accumulation of rainwater during the morning showers. Connaught Place, on the contrary, reported water accumulation along the outer circle, prompting authorities to deploy pumps to drain the excess water.
Parts of Greater Noida and Noida also received heavy showers, while several areas witnessed significant rainfall.
As per IMD, Safdarjung recorded 0.7 mm rainfall between 11:30 p.m. on Friday and 5:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The weather office said rain activity is expected to decline through Sunday, with only light to very light showers likely at isolated places from morning to afternoon. From September 7, Delhi is expected to witness partly cloudy skies, with no significant rainfall forecast.
