Waterlogging reported at Indira Gandhi International Airport after the heavy rains.Nine flights were reportedly diverted between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. due to bad weather — four each to Jaipur and Lucknow, and one to Ahmedabad.
The four flights that were diverted to Lucknow Airport on Friday were:
QP 1821: Bengaluru–Delhi, arrived at Lucknow at 4:37 pm
AI 484: Ludhiana–Delhi, arrived at 4:50 pm and departed at 5:51 pm
AI 2516: Indore–Delhi, arrived at 4:58 pm
AI 2541: Hyderabad–Delhi, arrived at 5:06 pm
Airport authorities confirmed the accumulated water was cleared and operations resumed.
Heavy rains lashed several parts of Delhi on Friday as the Met Department issued a red alert warning of intense rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
The weather office forecast another spell of rain between 5 and 8 p.m., with heavy rain at isolated places and winds of up to 60 kilometres per hour. According to the weather department’s 5:40 pm bulletin, rain continued across several parts of Delhi. The 72.2 mm recorded in Palam over three hours was the highest rainfall recorded in the capital during the period.
People out for Janmashtami celebrations were caught in a sudden downpour. Roads in quite a few residential colonies were submerged, turning them into waterlogged stretches.However, there have been no reports of waterlogging on major roads or traffic jams so far.
The IMD has also forecast isolated heavy rainfall over Chandigarh and Haryana, besides Delhi, from September 4 to 6. For Saturday, the IMD’s Delhi district forecast says several parts of the city can receive one or two spells of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning from early morning to forenoon, followed by another spell from afternoon to evening.
Unsettled weather is expected to continue on September 5, with rainfall likely to persist from the previous night.
