The new 1 USD coin, honoring the United States’ 250th birthday, went on sale on Wednesday, and it’s a Washington Coin Gallery coin, with President Donald Trump’s likeness on one side and the Great Seal of the United States on the other.
The US Mint claims that the coin was minted for 250 years of American history. Because of its architecture, it’s raised the eyes of people, with the sitting president’s second term also seeing him try to put his name and likeness on large amounts of American institutions.
Earlier this year, the Trump-appointed U.S. Commission of Fine Arts approved the coin’s design. The president said in a previous interview that “a very unusual” proposal to place his face on a coin is “a honor to me.”
Trump’s likeness on the coin has also led to some criticism because generally the laws prohibit a living president from being depicted on official US coins. But in special cases, the Treasury Secretary may authorize special commemorative coins.
On the obverse (front) of the coin is the portrait of Trump, with the word “LIBERTY” above, and the years “1776 ~ 2026” below. The Great Seal on the back depicts an eagle with one right claw resting on arrows and the other on an olive branch. It has a banner in its beak for props that translates to the Latin, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” which means “out of many, one.”
A roll containing 25 coins is priced at USD 61, while a bag of 100 costs USD 154.50. There are also some rolls and bags containing special issue coins, which have been also tossed in at random. The coins have a “July 4th” marking because they were made that day, which is the date of the Declaration of Independence.
At this time, there are a maximum of two orders per household. The Mint posted its website later that apparently the coin was on order, but it was temporarily out of stock with the addition of inventory.
