The Kolkata Police has slapped a suo motu case against former Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee and supporters of Trinamool Congress student wing protest for allegedly breaching some conditions laid by the Calcutta High Court.
The incident is a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) foundation day rally event organised in Cathedral Road, Kolkata on Friday. Banerjee had already received permission from the High Court to attend the function and the court had asked organisers to leave one of the lanes clear at all times. Police said the designated “flank” was not left open at the rally.
Authorities also alleged the proceedings actually went beyond the time the court had set. After the ganging, an FIR was lodged by the Hastings Police Station against Banerjee and the organiser of the TMCP programme.
“Everyone involved will be looked at in the case and due to the way that court order allegedly was ignored, the case was filed,” a cop told KTVN.
The development coincides with a new political spat between the TMC and the BJP in the State. Accusing the BJP government of screwing the economy badly, Banerjee, addressing the student wing rally, alleged that the police had been converted into “monstrous entity” under the administration of the BJP government.
While speaking about her time as chief minister, Banerjee mentioned that the police had been treating people with extra care and had being more ‘humane’ for her time and district. She has also alleged police atrocities against her supporters.
The ex-CM has vowed to oppose such moves and called it her “pledge” at the time of Raksha Bandhan.
The Kolkata police investigation will now test the police’s theory that the organisers and others involved violated the specific rules imposed by the High Court.
