An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 hit southwest China’s Sichuan province on Friday, according to reports by the China Earthquake Networks Center.
The quake struck Longchang city at a depth of 13 kilometres. The earthquake occurred at around 1:14 p.m. local time, with the epicentre of the seismic activity recorded at 29.23 degrees north latitude and 105.22 degrees east longitude.
Longchang is located roughly halfway between Chengdu and Chongqing and serves as a key transport hub between Sichuan and neighbouring areas. It is also part of the larger Chengdu-Chongqing urban and economic corridor, which remains a crucial transport hub of southwest China.
So far, no reports of casualties or damage have been recorded. Authorities and the local administration are engaged in assessing the aftermath.
The earthquake comes just two days after neighbouring country Nepal was hit by an apocalyptic flash flood that claimed several lives and left several people missing.
